William smalls biography

Small is known for being Thomas Jefferson's professor at William and Mary, and for having an influence on the young Jefferson. Small introduced him to members of Virginia society who were to have an important role in Jefferson's life, including George Wythe a leading jurist in the colonies and Francis Fauquier, the Governor of Virginia.
Recalling his years as a student, Thomas Jefferson described Small as: "a man profound in most of the useful branches of science, with a happy talent of communication, correct and gentlemanly manners, and a large and liberal mind Through this connection Small was elected to the Lunar Societya prestigious club on scientists and industrialists.
In he received his MD and established a medical practice in Birmingham, and shared a house with John Ash, a leading physician in the city. He was a mentor to Thomas Jefferson while Jefferson was a student at the school He went to Williamsburg, Virginia, in to join the faculty at William and Mary where he was the only non-clergyman on staff.

Small introduced the faculty to the Socratic method of questioning pupils as the primary means of teaching. Before this, students learned using memory lessons and recitations. Small, however, changed this approach: "In the lecture-discussion-demonstration method used by Small, professors provided formal lectures in the morning, followed by afternoon commentary, questions and answers, and possibly a series of experimental demonstrations.
Small was a major influence on Jefferson's intellectual development.

As well as his intellectual expertise, he was a highly significant networker, creating contacts and easing potential conflicts between the personalities who composed the Lunar Society.
