In our days, we always borrowed books from the library, read them and in the next class, would able to paraphrase what one read to the whole class. But all that is no more. The literacy level has really gone down. I encourage parents to serve as role models for their kids and encourage them to read more. What were some of the most memorable moments of your childhood?
I attended Christ School, in Ado Ekiti, and one cannot go to that school without having memorable moments. There were so many activities that one cannot easily forget. I was a member of the drama group then and I was a very good actress in school. Everyone knew me by the names of the different characters I played. I was also involved in the literary aspect too.
I was a chapel prefect because it is a Christian school and they taught us holiness. What were your childhood ambitions? I wanted to become a lawyer but somewhere along the line, I was discussing with someone and the person said I could become a lawyer or a teacher because I could talk. I then said if I became a teacher, I wanted to be at a higher level.
I thank God I was able to achieve that. Were your parents okay with your decision to become a lecturer? Of course, they were okay with it. My mother, particularly, wanted me to be a teacher, so she was happy with it. In my family, we are academics. We are mostly PhD holders, and the least you can have is a Masters. Can you recall how you met your husband?
I met my husband as a student in the university. However, I had earlier met him at a wedding in the family. He tried to talk to me and with the way we used to think at that time, I believed he just wanted to use and dump, so I ran away. I even reported him to my aunt and told her to warn him not to talk to me again. However, when I got to the university, I met him again.
I had even forgotten that we met somewhere before. He was a senior staff at the library at the time. We ended up getting married and I am happy I took that decision. What were some of the qualities that endeared you to him? One of the ways a woman gets attracted to a man is if he is handsome, and he was.

My husband and I were working at the Obafemi Awolowo University then and we had our children there.

It was after all my children had graduated from the university that I went into politics. While nursing my children, I took it easy with academics. And I think that is why I became a professor late. Did your husband and family support your decision to go into politics? When I was first asked to be deputy governor, my husband was still alive but ill. He was even trying to persuade me to go. I thank God that I did not leave him. However, a couple of years later, he passed on, and that was then I decided to go into politics. I was actually invited to oversee the basic education board and since I had done a lot of work in that area in Abuja and several states, I jumped at it.

And if you are a woman, protect your femininity; safeguard your sex and gender. Once you do that, your family will support you. How do you relax? I like watching movies and dancing. I actually dance alone sometimes. My late husband used to say I was the only person that danced without a partner. I also read my Bible a lot. My life is somewhat triangular— from my home to church, and to work.
I attend weddings, seminars, and have a lot of good friends that we have been together for a long time. I also like to laugh and gist a lot. Your Email required. Government of Ekiti State, Nigeria.
